Kindergarten has been very
busy again this week. We
learned how to identify and
write the letter Dd. Have you
ever planted magic doughnut
seeds? We did! WOW!
Weren't we surprised to come
to school the next morning and
see that real doughnuts had
grown for us to eat. We had
fun making dinosaurs too.
Learning to write numbers
1,2,3,4, and 5 can be fun
especially when you get to do
it with shaving cream! We also
learn that people change over
time and that most animal
babies look similar to their
parents. Ask any kindergarten
student what day of the week
or month it is!

The First grade have started learning subtraction
facts from 9. The learned number fact combinations
are helping them do well on this new concept.
In Adventures in Language, they are putting 3 words
starting with the same letter in alphabetical order by
looking at the second letter of the word. They are
also editing sentences. In Science, students are
learning how seasons influence animals behavior.

This week the 2nd graders have written friendly letters to each other. They have learned that a
friendly letter has a heading, greeting, body, closing, and signature. They have had fun telling their
friends things about themselves and asking them questions so they can reply back. In social studies,
they have learned about being good citizens. Citizens have a right to vote and a responsibility to obey
the laws. Students participated in an "election" by voting for candy bars on a ballot. Next week, they
will enjoy eating the winning candy bar!!! In math, the 2nd graders are playing all sorts of fun math
games to practice place value, comparison of numbers, and identifying what number comes one
before and one after. It has been such a fun week of learning in the 2nd grade classroom!

The 3rd graders have completed their addition unit in math and consider themselves masters of rounding! They started a
plant unit in science and are learning about what photosynthesis is and what each plant part does to help plants survive.
They are also busy observing some bean seeds to see how they change over time. Using the scientific method, the
variable they changed is light vs. dark. They are busy making their observations and taking measurements. Stay tuned
for their conclusions.

The 4th graders were happy to get back to a regular
schedule this week!
*The 4th graders finished reading their novel, The
Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. They
enjoyed comparing and contrasting the novel to the
movie (if they had seen it). There were several
differences!
*In language arts, they started working on pulling out
key words in a passage to help them write
summaries. This can be tricky, but they showed great
effort!
*In math, the 4th graders worked on multiplying 2 or
3-digit numbers by 1-digit. Sometimes it was difficult
to not confuse the processes of multiplication and
addition when we were adding in our regroupings!
*In science, they finished their chapter on plants.
They enjoyed reviewing for Thursday's test with a
game on the iPads.
*In Nebraska history, the 4th graders ended their
studies about the natural resources and crops found
in Nebraska. 3/4 of the class got an A or a B on the
test!! We also enjoyed having a familiar face be our
guest speaker from the Nebraska Soybean Board--
Janie Score. She talked to them about the many
products that can be made from soybeans. They
learned that more than 3,000 products can be made
from the oil of the soybeans or other soybean
components! Soybeans are pretty important crops in
our state!
